Working on Character Detail Page

posted on January 6, 2017, 10:39 am
So MOST everything is done, except some piddly things.  The page that needs the most custom code is the character detail page.  This is my scribble on a layout for it:   And the rest of my to-do list: To-Do: magnifying glass on the image gallery search bounces on click custom field “Excerpt” and “Audio Book” on the series lineup detail page fix up NC image on homepage so her tail isn’t so short image gallery bg image needs to be broken out and animated (use the same bg image as the series lineup) look at using a sprite for the text on the bg image on the page.  It currently uses jquery to render the text and then another plugin for the gradient Image gallery detailscode Similar Images (Works but might revisit for to add similar tags support) Make Other Media page look pretty Author interviews, change the swooshy <hr> tags to the half transparent hr tags Preload images so animations in the header work properly text in header sometimes gets cut off (Series Lineup)

My Website To-Do List (Update)

posted on December 15, 2016, 6:43 pm
I got through a fair amount on my previous website to-do list, but having the completed items crossed out made my eyes go buggy.  Plus it was hard weed through the finished stuff and just look at the “what’s left” stuff.  So this is pretty much the same content but only shows what I have left.  When these items are done, I’ll just update this post and dump them under a “Completed” heading so I know it’s done. I really hope I made sense 🙂 To-Do: magnifying glass on the image gallery search bounces on click custom field “Excerpt” and “Audio Book” on the series lineup detail page fix up NC image on homepage so her tail isn’t so short do up a template for the character details image gallery bg image needs to be broken out and animated (use the same bg image as the series lineup) look at using a sprite for the text on the bg image on the page.  It currently uses jquery to render the text and then another plugin for the gradient Image gallery detailscode Similar Images (Works but might revisit for to add similar tags support) Make Other Media page look pretty Author interviews, change the swooshy <hr> tags to the half transparent hr tags Preload images so animations in the header work properly text in header sometimes gets cut off (Series Lineup) Completed Tasks: fix 404 page About the author signature is (no longer) icky completely removed pageviews 404 page is an example, but if content doesn’t fill the whole page there’s a space between the grey content div and the footer “Back to Top” on character page should be right aligned and smaller and gold clicking on the letters on the character page goes to next letter (might be a padding/margin issue)

My Website To-Do List

posted on November 18, 2016, 4:40 pm
So yeah, I have a fair amount of functionality working thus far, but I thought, “Hey I should write a to-do list so I can keep track of what’s left!”.  Then I thought, “What the heck? Let’s make a blog entry about it and just update the entry whenever I finish something.” (Anything with a line through it has been completed) add random quotes to homepage under carousel fix up nav menu so on rollover the width doesn’t increase and make the text bounce (once finished the red border can be removed) find out why nav menu has an empty <li> tag at the end sub menus in nav menu are there, but are being overlapped put nav menu on one line fix the header on resize rename “Blog” to “News” ??? autocomplete for tags in the search box on the Image Gallery if artist is empty/blank don’t show the “Images with same artist” slideshow magnifying glass on the image gallery search bounces on click custom field “Excerpt” and “Audio Book” on the series lineup detail page fix up NC image on homepage so her tail isn’t so short Images with same artist shows the thumbnail of the image we’re currently on fix homepage bg image so sky isn’t as pink “Back to Top” on character page should be right aligned and smaller and gold clicking on the letters on the character page goes to next letter (might be a padding/margin issue) do up a template for the character details image gallery bg image needs to be broken out and animated (use the same bg image as the series lineup) image gallery search doesn’t search tags if you do a search after a filter, it adds both together (image gallery) look at using a sprite for the text on the bg image on the page.  It currently uses jquery to render the text and then another plugin for the gradient image gallery paging doesn’t work (issue with the url rewrite that was done for the image gallery attachment) the sortby and imagesperpage querystrings for the imagegallery don’t have to show if it’s the default Check the code for the js function RemoveFilter on the Image Gallery page check out the paging on Image gallery.  It works but querystrings are being duplicated change the imagesperpage querystring to ipp on the image gallery the Remove Filter icon mucks up the top alignment (http://nightcat.ca/image-gallery?ipp=50&character=Nightcat) duplicate querystring on paging in the Image GalleryTesting done (appears that the ipp doesn’t show up twice but the others do):ipp, paging fine ipp and sortby (http://nightcat.ca/image-gallery/page/2?imagesperpage=50&sortby=oldest&sortby=oldest) ipp, sortby and artist  (http://nightcat.ca/image-gallery/page/2?imagesperpage=50&sortby=oldest&artist=J.L.+MacDonald&sortby=oldest&&artist=J.L.+MacDonald) ipp, sortby and character (http://nightcat.ca/image-gallery/page/2?imagesperpage=50&sortby=oldest&character=Nightcat&sortby=oldest&&character=Nightcat) Image gallery detailsif a custom field doesn’t have anything, don’t display it (ie artist) add colourist and inker custom field the name of the author should have an href and link back to gallery with it filtered on their name was working, but suddenly isn’t now (http://nightcat.ca/image-gallery/silhouette works though) code Similar Images (coding in progress) hide Similar Image and Same Artist images sections if there aren’t any (Works but might revisit for to add similar tags support) Code Images with Same Artist code next and prev links for next and prev images style back to gallery link Make Other Media page look pretty fix 404 page Author interviews, change the swooshy <hr> tags to the half transparent hr tags About the author signature is icky do I want pageviews to be displayed on each page?  Or just stuff under the image gallery? Preload images so animations in the header work properly text in header sometimes gets cut off (Series Lineup) in the Blog date drop down, show the number of blog entries for that month/year Create a “Contact Us” page fix typos in this blog entry

Back to the Old Hosting Provider

posted on November 14, 2016, 3:30 pm
Well, that was a bust. I moved all my sites to Amazon web services because it was supposed to be cheaper AND you were supposed to get a year free.  I thought I read the fine print, but I think there was some I missed.  You could get 750 hours of computing time free per month for a year.  If you had TWO sites, then you’d get half that time for free.  That part I understood and figured even with like 5 sites, I’d still get something for free.  No dice.  I ended up with a $75 bill from Amazon.  For my first month with them.  I was paying like 30 some dollars at GoDaddy for my sites, though I knew I probably could go on a cheaper plan. It was such a pain.  I moved all my sites over, relearned Linux commands, and fought with permissions on Amazon only to get that stupid bill and move everything BACK to GoDaddy.  I am now on a plan that’s like $20 a month and I can have unlimited sites.  So I’m still saving money which is good. I didn’t bother moving the ngihtcat-online site over because I was eventually going to use nightcat.ca with a complete overhaul of the site anyway.  I’m still working on stuff, but the blog, series lineup and image gallery are working.  The menu up top does looks a  bit weird because I’m still debugging it. The one goofy thing is the image loading.  I’ve got some animations taking place but sometimes they happen without the image being completely loaded first, so that’s something I need to work on as well. So far I like what’s here and I’ll plug away at it.

New site and new hosting provider

posted on October 4, 2016, 10:21 am
Hello all, Just wanted a little blurb on the front page explaining the transition of nightcat-online.com to nightcat.ca  I’ve been working on the new site under the new domain, and as you can probably tell, it’s still under construction, though parts are functioning. I switched hosting providers and figured there wasn’t much sense in moving the old nightcat-online template over when it’s just going to get replaced anyway.

We’re off to comic con this weekend! 😀 Lion’s Share Press will have a table there selling Nightcat books and some other Nightcat goodies. “Where the Devil Dwells” is now available as a trade paperback or an ebook. The story takes place about a month after “The Darkness of Shadows” and Nightcat is coming to terms with her powers and attempts to juggle her two lives which gets harder the more Nightcat’s help is needed.

It’s official! “The Darkness of Shadows” at long last is available to order! Lion’s Share Press has it in their catalogue AND they also have a contest to win a Nightcat mini-poster. Ah, what a better way to celebrate Dana’s birthday than with the launch of her debut novel and a contest? 🙂

New Short Story in the Works

posted on February 12, 2013, 8:22 pm
I’ve been tied up on some other projects so I’ve been feverishly working on those to meet deadlines.  But those are starting to wrap up so I can get caught up on Nightcat related things.  (Isn’t funny how life gets in the way of life? LOL) My newest short story “Burden of Proof” is nearing completion.  I think it’s around the 5000 word mark right now, but I still have more I have to write and then rewrite one scene.  And the podcast is being edited as well, it’s about 2/3 done.  After that I do want to do a podcast of Metahumans, and basically any short story I write.  And the novels once they get published. I’ll also be adding some more pages to the site and redoing the backend so you won’t see a whole lot of change.  No idea when that’ll get done mind you.  So yeah, in short, I’ve been busy working towards deadlines and not having much writing/drawing time. You know, come to think of it, this journal entry pretty much mirrors my last one.  Oops! 🙂

“Marked for Death” Podcast

posted on January 17, 2013, 7:52 pm
Man, I’ve got so many things on the go right now, it’s sometimes hard to keep my head straight.  LOL The podcast for “Marked for Death” is nearing completion.  It’s all recorded but I’m being pretty picky over the quality and re-recorded lines here and there.  Plus since it’s the first time attempting a podcast, it’d taking a bit longer.  I plan on doing a podcast of my story “Night(cat) of the Living Dead” from Metahumans vs the Undead as well.  And then the podcast for the other short story I’m currently writing. That story is pretty close to being done its first rough draft.  And I’ve figured out a better title (or rather my buddy Jim figured out a better title) “Burden of Proof” is what I’m going with.  The working title (as lame as it was) was “Wanted”. I also had a brain fart today for some more images.  You’ve likely seen the text message pics I’ve done between the characters, well, I’m thinking I could extend that to Facebook and have the characters interacting on there as well.  It’d be similar in idea to the iPhone text messages but this way more characters can get involved in the conversation and I’m not limited to the height of the iPhone. And I thought I could have Nightcat posting a status and having Dana comment on it or vice versa just for sh*ts and giggles. I did up a quick Nightcat chibi that I haven’t posted here.  I generally try to post finished stuff on this site, but maybe I’ll start posting sketches.  This one was just for fun and I know it has a lot of flaws, but I’m OK with that.  I plan on putting it in Photoshop and fixing it up anyway.  I more wanted to have some fun with the traditional art cause I haven’t done that it in a while. I’ve also been working on updating the site.  You won’t really see a difference in the look of it, just reworking the backend and adding in some new pages, like for the podcasts, a What’s New page and the ability to comment on the images. Short of working on some coding projects on the side, and all that I mentioned above, nothing else is new and exciting. 🙂

Nightcat Comics and Lathe Projects

posted on November 29, 2012, 8:35 pm
Well, it’s now November and the ground is covered in snow.  Ergo, my garage plans are on hold.  I didn’t quite get the interior completed BUT I did get the underground conduit so I can run the electrical lines pretty much anytime I can.  Once I buy the proper wire of course. So my pen making business has now been moved to my laundry room.  My lathe and drill press are now crammed in a small space.  I don’t mind so much because now that I’m not working on building fences or garages and whatnot I can catch up on other things, like my pens and writing and drawing. I’m in the process of making a new site for my handmade pens, I have a domain set up right now and currently it’s linked to my deviant art page.  I do eventually want to get a gallery up and running to showcase my pens and have people order from the site as well.  You can check out my gallery here: http://www.WriteBrainPens.com I have completed the 4 page Nightcat comic and have a bunch of other mini comics on the go as well.  I want to be draw a bunch of similar comics and put them in one comic book.  I’m looking at prices right now and have several ideas for the short story comic ideas. I’ve also looked into pricing for posters and it looks like it’s a feasible project.  I’m currently working on a picture of the Trio (Raphael, Nightcat and David).  Raphael is almost completed.  I’m drawing each character separately and will Photoshop them all together.  And each character poster will be also available.  If you want a sneak peek click here And with the ground frozen and covered in snow, I can get caught up on my writing and drawing.  I’ve got another Nightcat short story on the go and plan on publishing that on Amazon, just like I did for “Marked for Death”.  It’s still untitled, but it will involve someone framing Nightcat for murder. Well, I think this blog is long enough so once I complete that Raphael image and short story, I’ll post more info here.  Promise! 🙂
