Short Stories and Garages

posted on August 30, 2012, 8:20 pm
Wow, really?  Has it been a month since my last blog?  Boo urns! Not a lot had happened recently, merely a lot of the same.  My second superhero short story ended up getting rejected and I didn’t really bother to start writing that flash fiction for Wicked East Press. To say I’ve been busy with my garage(s) is an understatement.  The old garage is FINALLY down.  I couldn’t believe how it was built and how something so old, rickety and termite infested could have lasted that long.  But she did me well.  And now that she’s down and the new fence is built, my yard has like doubled in size.  There’s still a huge mound of debris in the backyard so I’m planning on making several dump trips this long weekend. Now that that’s winding down, I can concentrate more on writing and drawing etc…  The next thing on my list is to finish that comic.  It’s coming along rather well.  Page 4 is done, page 2 is half done, page 1 is mostly done and I’m working on page 3.  I still have lots to do and I want to get it done as soon as I can so I’m not scrambling to make the deadline. Once that’s completed, I plan on focusing on that radio play idea.  Plus I have some other ideas for some simple 1 page comics of Nightcat and the gang so stay tuned!

Untitled Canadian Superhero Short Story

Wow, I’ve got a LOT of things on the go right now, and a lot of impending deadlines.  But hey, nothing motivates me more than upcoming deadlines. LOL “Marked for Death” is now available on Amazon.com, you can check it out here and it can be yours for a mere $0.99 (nudge nudge)  🙂 I have written another Canadian superhero short story for Tyche Books and just have to go over the edits and submit that by the end of the month.  Wicked East Press is also looking for flash fiction stories (500-1000 words long) that I’d like to write something for and submit.  I have an idea for it, I just haven’t sat down and actually wrote the thing.  That deadline is also at the end of the month.  (Can you say “procrastinate”?) The other project I have on the go is for A.N.A Comics. They’re looking for submissions to their “We’re Indy” anthology so I’m writing and illustrating a 4 page comics of Nightcat.  I’ve been drawing Nightcat and the gang for a while now, but I’ve never done a comic before so this is a bit new for me.  I have all the pages laid out and page 1 is almost completed.  Just need to ink and colour one panel on that page.  This submission is due at the end of September. The other thing I’ve been toying with is a radio play of “Marked for Death”.  I was originally thinking of doing a podcast of it, but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of a radio play.  It’d be more work, but I also think it’d be more fun and entertaining. So yeah, I’ve been busy lately on the drawing and writing front and having to squeeze time in for garage and fence building cause summer is slowly going away and I want it all done before the snow flies.

Life, The Universe and Everything

I got a response back regarding my Nightcat short story submission.  Unfortunately, they didn’t pick it up, BUT I do plan on making available as an ebook as soon as I draw a cover image for it.  So rest assured, Nightcat fans, the story won’t go to waste. 🙂 That being said, I will likely be writing another superhero short story to submit, but this won’t be Nightcat related.  The deadline is August 1 so I have some time.  It’ll be a bit of a challenge but I’m also not planning on making the story overly long.  The Nightcat story “Marked for Death” was around 9400, a fairly decent size. I did get some feedback on the story itself and it wasn’t a”You suck as a writer that’s why we rejected the story” but more because it wasn’t quite what they were looking for.  Not that rejection letters are something writers want, but they are part and parcel of being a writer.  The publisher said they enjoyed the enthusiasm and the energy of the story so even though it was rejected, I don’t feel like it’s a total loss or anything. (Granted yesterday I was pretty bummed, but that was largely because a lot of things went wrong that day) Once I get the ebook on Amazon, I’ll link to it from here. I have an idea for a cover image, I just need to sit down and sketch it out.  I’m hoping this weekend sometime, but we’ll see what transpires. 🙂 I’ve also sketched up a few more Nightcat characters as Simpsons.  You’ll likely have noticed a new image of Paige Brooks up there.  I sketched out Rachel (Dana’s niece) and Prodigy.  They’re pretty rough, but seeing as I’m going to ink and colour them in Photoshop, it’s not that big of a deal.

Simpsons Overload!

posted on July 2, 2012, 10:18 am
So, are you guys and gals sick of me Simpsonizing all my characters yet? 🙂 I uploaded a couple new pics the last few days and was thinking “Gee, I’m running out of people to Simpsonize” but when I sat down and thought of it, I realized how wrong I was!  I have a sketch of Victor that I need to Photoshop, but I can also do Alex, Rachel, Kurt, Prodigy, Richard, Darren and Trinity so I’m only like half done the full set. ha ha ha Also a few days ago I submitted that short story of mine.  It ended up being around the 9400 word mark or so.  I I was able to put in a lot of Canadianisms and references without it being so in-your-face.  And I even managed to put in some new tidbits of info that hasn’t been mentioned in the novels yet.  Granted, I planned to have them mentioned in the novel so it’s not like I’m spoiling anything by having it in a short story. Other than that, just enjoying the 30 degree weather out there.  I absolutely LOVE it.  Summer is far too short here in Canada as far as I’m concerned so I got to milk this for all it’s worth.  I hate the cold. (I know, I know, you’re likely asking why I still live in Canada if I hate the cold…) So I’ve been dividing my time between drawing/writing and garage stuff.  It’s coming, slowly but surely.  I know summer sort of just got here, but it goes so quickly that I need to hustle my butt.  The old garage is fairly clean now, but even after that’s done I need to get the electrician to come in an wire it (or at least run a line to the new garage) before the snow flies. That being said, I love being busy and working out in the shop.  God willing, I can have it insulated and heated before winter so I can continue to work there even if it’s -40.

Comic Con Woes

posted on June 14, 2012, 8:32 pm
Wow, am I far behind on my blogging or what?  I think the last entry was like 6 months ago.  I shall chastise myself harshly. LOL There have been some happenings on the writing front lately.  Back in April I went to a Comic Con in Calgary and met up with another publisher who has an open call out for superhero short stories with Canadian content so I jumped at it.  I mean why not?  All my characters are Canadian and the story takes place in Ontario.  That being said, it was/is still challenging to put in more Canadianisms in there without making it so-in-your-face that it gets irritating. The story is done, just in one of the (hopefully final) editing sessions.  It’s about the 8900 word mark or so.  I’m hoping to be able to submit it soon and once I find out more (like if it was accepted) I’ll post an updated entry here, I promise. Other than that, I’ve been doing only some writing lately.  I’m sort of fighting against the seasons and the pocketbook right now.  Last year I built a new garage and am trying to get the inside squared away with shelves and whatnot so I can move stuff from the old garage (read glorified shed).  I also need to come up with some cash to hire an electrician to run power to it, then I’ll need to rent a dumpster for when I tear down the old garage and then at some point I need to move the fence-line closer to the alley.  (Not sure why but when I bought the house the back fence went right through the property.  I have like 35 feet on the other side of the fence so I want to rebuilt it so I can have a bigger yard.) I’m trying to get all this done before the snow flies.  I know, I know, summer/spring is just here, but this is Canada.  It can snow pretty much anytime. LOL Oh, and you may have noticed that I have uploaded some new pics the last little while.  I was only able to get a couple commissions at the con (long story short, we couldn’t get in on Saturday cause they oversold tickets) but those are posted.  I’ve also been having fun turning my characters into the Simpsons.  I did one of Nightcat a while back and started that back up again.  So far I’ve uploaded David, Dana and Raphael but I have a sketch of Victor, Paige and Trinity.  I know, it’s weird for me to Simpsonize characters I don’t even have my own pictures of, but I figure this could help me get a handle on their physical looks and whatnot in a more simple/stylized fashion.  Then I can try it in my own style.  So yeah, expect more pics form me once I finish off this short story and am able to get caught up on garage stuff.  (Wish me luck!)

Site Upgrade

Aaaand we’re on a roll. 🙂 The next thing on my to-do list is to finish off the members section.  I’ve just started it and you may have noticed the “Login” in the top right hand side of the nav menu.  I already have the database set up for members, but it’s all the other little bits like creating a new account, updating an account, password retrieval and whatnot that I still have to do.  Not overly difficult, just time consuming. Right now the members only won’t really do too much, but the other section I’m working on will be for commenting on the images.  Basically you have to be in to comment.  Eventually I want to do a little notification of the images that were uploaded since the user’s last login date, and perhaps messages to other members.  (That part will be secondary)  I’m thinking of working the site as a type of hybrid between Amazon.com and DeviantArt.  Trying to get some stuff going to up the user activity. If there’s any other features you can think of, please let me know.  I’m always open to ideas. Oh, and the other thing you may have noticed is the related images in the character section.  It will randomly grab images with that character in it.  Figured it’d be a nice little feature to add in. 🙂 And you can now search by character OR artist.

New Site Techie Issues

posted on December 28, 2011, 5:00 pm
So I’ve finished a few more items on my to-do list, mostly the back end stuff.  The blog archive is up and running, though not quite how I wanted it.  (For the techies out there, I tried to use URL routing to make nice URLS but whenever I uploaded the code, it would break the site.  So I’ve had to resort to using querystrings for the time being) I’ve also uploaded (I think anyway) all the Nightcat related images by me.  I’m still working on uploading the rest of the commission pieces. I hope you all had a good holiday!

“Metahumans vs the Undead”

posted on December 15, 2011, 9:46 pm
So I’ve done a bit more coding on the backend although I want to do more work on the book overview pages.  I have added “Metahumans vs the Undead” to the lineup and also placed links to Amazon for you folks. I’ve also added a few more images, and I’m slowly getting them all uploaded.  I’m also looking at having the blogs archived.  All the entries I’ve been posting are saved in a database, so I just need to do the layout for it, but that shouldn’t be overly difficult.

Site Search Engine

posted on December 7, 2011, 8:39 pm
I finished the first have of the search engine and uploaded that tonight for you folks.  Right now it’s limited to searching by characters, but I will be working on a keyword search here pretty soon. The only other notable things on my list is a small rewrite on the books section so I can categorize literature as novels or short stories and provide links to where you can buy it (them).  I also need to write a privacy policy. Eventually when I get more traffic and/or can think of more features to add, I’ll likely create user profile.  It’d be free but it would be to monitor/track things like comments on images and to (hopefully) prevent trolls.  Or at least make it a bit more difficult. 🙂 If there’s any specific features you think would be nice to see on here, let me know by going to the “Contact Us” page.  The privacy policy isn’t up yet, but rest assured I will NOT sell email addresses.  All I require your email addy for is so I can respond. The listing for the ebook and hard copy of “Metahumans vs the Undead” is up on Amazon.  The eBook is listed at $4.99 (USD) and the hard copy at $12.99.  Why not check it out and write a review? 🙂

“Metahumans vs the Undead” Hard Copy Soon Available

posted on December 1, 2011, 5:28 pm
Just a quick little entry to let you folks know that the hard copy for “Metahumans vs the Undead” should be out next week or so.  Amazon now also has an entry for it. I’m still plugging away at the back end of the site.  (You know, this blog thingy is turning into a to-do list for me LOL)  I’m looking at having a rating system for the pictures (or even the books).  It’s about half done right now.  It’s not a necessary component to the site, but I like the idea.  I’d like to get it done as soon as I can, but I don’t need to work on it 24/7 🙂 I also want at some point to have a calender control where you guys can read past blog entries.  I haven’t started on that one yet, but it shouldn’t take much to program.   The image rating system is now functioning.  There was a few minor glitches when I first launched it but they should all be ironed out now.  Funny thing is, when I was testing that, I was mucking around on the site and noticed the forward/back buttons on the image detail page and the images displayed on the gallery pages, didn’t coincide.  It was a stupid little error (I had it filling up the gallery vertically instead of going horizontally, THEN starting a new row.).  I plan on doing a search feature for the galleries as well as having categories where you can choose to filter images by character, style or whatnot.  I have the backend done for that, I just need to implement the front end of it.  But at least the database is all set up and ready to go.
